Very little sunshine so far this year

It’s looking increasingly likely that 2015 will be remembered in Scotland as the year of fried green tomatoes and chutney.

  1. I have a couple questions but keep in mind that I am not a gardener.

Is there a reason you are using what I am assuming is red plastic over the soil? Could you use another color? Does it have anything to do with preventing weeds?

What are the clear plastic objects on top of the red plastic?

  2. Hi Ladybug!

The reflective wavelength of the red plastic is supposed to encourage tomatoes and strawberries to produce better usable crops.

Whether this will be the case for my situation may not be provable this year.
I’m certainly keeping an eye on my close neighbours greenhouses and poly tunnels.
Their tomatoes seem to be roughly at the same stage as mine and none are showing any signs of turning red either.

My only conclusion so far is that it’s not doing any harm, is helping keep the weeds down and as I buried a soaker hose, I’m not having to water as often due to the plastic stopping the water from evaporating as quickly.

The clear plastic objects are just cut off pop/soda bottles I’m using to make it easier to slowly add tomato feed every 2 weeks.
